The “Fonds Experimentelles Musiktheater” (feXm) of NRW KULTURsekretariat und Kunststiftung NRW has been the only relevant funding initiative in the German-speaking world for the past one and a half decades to develop and produce new music theatre formats together with ensembles in the independent theatre scene and in association with theatres and opera houses. As a funding initiative, feXm is oriented towards an expanded understanding of music theatre that is not fixed on forms of contemporary opera. Its work is directed both at the fundamental promotion of process-oriented and open-ended music theatre formats and at their integration into the programmes of municipal and music theatres.
By mid-2019, a total of 15 world premieres had been realised at ten theatres in NRW, which at the same time represented the entire spectrum of different aesthetics, formats and working methods of contemporary music theatre.
Information on feXm productions from 2006 to 2019 can be found here.
