Three houses – one project. As part of the NOperas! funding initiative, three theatres form a network for three seasons each. Under the label “NOperas!”, which is mentioned in their publications, they jointly realise a project shown at all three theatres in the same season. The theatres alternate between first and subsequent production sites. The feXm, supported by the NRW KULTURsekretariat and the Kunststiftung NRW, provides its own dramaturgical supervision, organisational support and public relations work and thus acts both as a funding institution and as co-producer for the theatres participating in the network.
Resources, funding, project selection. In addition to the funds provided by the theatres (stage personnel, technical equipment, trades and other infrastructure), feXm and the theatres jointly provide a production budget of up to 200,000 euros for each production. On the basis of a cost and financing plan submitted with the application, the budget is managed by the project team itself. The choice of the annual project is made by a jury of experts with the participation of representatives of the three theatres and the sponsors. The jury makes its decision on the basis of a two-stage procedure, which includes an in-depth discussion with the finalists. In the run-up to this discussion, the finalists can contact the respective theatres for a more detailed exploration of existing possibilities and conditions.
Process. In several work phases, the NOperas! funding programme takes into account changed production methods in the field of current theatre forms. In this way, the selected production team is to be given the opportunity to work in a processual way on the development of a play in conjunction with rehearsals. Applicants are free to use this space according to their own needs. The work phases serve to work towards an initial presentation before the transfer to the other two theatres. From the outset, they can be made up of several parts, combining each rehearsal phase with an independent production. The number, timing and duration of the theatrical work will be determined by the selected team in consultation with the theatres, based on a guideline of up to five production phases of two to three weeks each.
Who can apply
and which projects have the prospect of funding? The work of
feXm, and thus also of NOperas!, is oriented towards an expanded
understanding of music theatre that aims at changing forms of
contemporary opera. Concepts which, in the field of a more
performative than work-based understanding of theatre, question the
relationship between musical sound and space, language and theatre
action, have a chance of being funded. This includes the inclusion of
digital media as well as process-related concepts that fundamentally
involve the field of social media. The competition is open to teams
throughout Europe who are jointly responsible for the interaction of
the various levels of theatre involved (composition, text, direction,
stage). The group must include a production manager who is
responsible for organisational matters and for the administration and
accounting of financial resources.
